Governance Update
President Bob Coulson reported that there was a recent meeting with the Ministry for Municipal Affairs representative, Simon Rassmussen to discuss moving the governance issue forward. However, the current BCGEU Strike has delayed further developments.
MLPOS Community Recreation Survey
Vice President Roy Moore reported that the survey asked about three areas over which MLPOS has responsibility – Thieves Bay Marina, Privateers Park and Mouat Park. The survey received 218 responses with suggestions for improvements including a horseshoe pitch, bocce, cornhole, toilet facilities, drinking water, offshore parking, a clubhouse gazebo and adult resistance training. The highest votes received were for toilet facilities followed by adult resistance training and a drinking fountain. For the coming year, toilet facilities and a drinking fountain will be prioritized.
With respect to Thieves Bay Marina, the most votes received favoured the installation of water at the head of all docks. This will be reviewed by the Directors over the coming year. Doug Bolton, Special Projects Director reported that a covenant prevents MLPOS from transferring ownership of Mouat Park, but CRD have agreed to lease it with a plan for Pender Parks and Recreation to take over maintenance of the park. However, no response has been received to date from PPRC to this proposal.
BC Hydro Thieves Bay Project
MLPOS President Bob Coulson reported that he contacted BC Hydro representatives recently for an update. He has now been informed that BC Hydro are postponing this project for at least a year with plans to complete the project by the summer of 2027. The current undersea cable is to be retired, and a new cable brought into the Magic Lake area which has been identified as the most cost-effective route. BC Hydro will hold a public meeting in the Spring of 2026 and members were encouraged to attend with their questions about the project.
